Privacy and your data
What Recall captures, and where it stays
- Recall samples your screen about every 15 seconds, and not at all while the screen is locked, while you are away or while Recall is paused. A local AI reads each frame just long enough to describe it, then the image is discarded.
- What it keeps (short descriptions, app names, window titles, timings, your notes and corrections) is stored in
~/Library/Application Support/Recallon your Mac. - Recall never uses the microphone or camera, never logs keystrokes and never reads the clipboard.
- Asks read from your chats stay on your Mac. The picture of a chat behind an open ask is kept only while the ask is open.
- Content that looks private, such as adult or dating content, is dropped automatically. You can't switch this off.
Pausing and excluding
Pause from the tray switch (see The menu bar tray). Exclude any app in Settings → Excluded apps; an excluded app is never captured, analysed or reopened.
Usage analytics and crash reports
Recall sends usage analytics: which screens and features get used, for example "Smart Return opened" or "restored 3 apps". These events are linked to a random install ID. They never contain anything from your screen: no window titles, file names, URLs, project or task names, notes or message text. Crash reports follow the same switch and carry no work content either.
- Turn both off with Settings → Privacy → Usage analytics & crash reports.
- With the switch off, Recall still sends anonymous counts of how far setup gets (no install ID), so the team can see where installs get stuck.
- What's sent lists every event in plain words with a real sample.
- Delete my analytics data erases what Recall's servers hold for your install and starts a new install ID.
Diagnostics sharing
Diagnostics sharing is off by default. If you turn it on, bug reports can include recent screenshots and analysis, redacted on your Mac first (emails, keys and credentials are masked). They are used to fix your problem and to improve Recall Core, Recall's own model, stored in the EU and deleted after 30 days.
Erasing your data
- Forget history (Settings → Data) deletes everything Recall captured on this Mac, plus your analytics data and feedback conversations on Recall's servers.
- Uninstall… (Settings → Data) removes the app, your data, the AI model and settings. If you drag Recall to the Trash instead, also delete
~/Library/Application Support/Recall.
